Miscellaneous Wood Projects

Wine Rack, 1982

Alder.

Built for my sister. Another of those projects made more challenging by working in my little apartment.

Polishing Plane, 2001

Honduras Mahogany, body with Lignum Vitae sole.

Throat is adjustable for fine cuts. Plane iron is from Hock (now a part of Lee Valley). I’ve made many planes with various curved soles. This one yields a glass-like smooth polish on most woods.

Towel Racks, 2002 and 2015

Cherry and Maple. 16 high.

Oil/varnish mix.

Hanging racks for small towels. My wife sketched the outline as a little doodle that looked so good that I scaled it up to life-size.

Amplified Compute Speakers, 2015

Zebrawood, 6 x 5 x 3.5

Watco and wax

Why settle for crummy commercial computer speakers? These are also resistant to RF interference from my ham equipment and the amplifiers run on 12 VDC.

Shoji Screens, 2017

Vertical grain Western red cedar, red oak. Stained. 6 ft high.

Set of four Shoji screens used as a folding room divider. Paper is a heavy laminated material from eshoji.com. Design guidelines from the excellent shoji book by Jay van Arsdale.

Tool Caddy, 2024

Red oak, stained. 11 x 6 x 3.5.

This sits on my mechanical bench as a home for pointy tools and such. Top tray is filled with blocks of cork and basswood.

Small Tote, 2025

Red oak, oil and varnish. 11 x 12 x 7.

My wife painted the flowers on each end. A gift for my cousin. From the FWW #315 article by Mike Pekovich.
